"Und das Ganze dennoch - etwas langweilig" - La Caravane de Caire

I was searching for material for another article, when I stumbled across this little gem.

As André-Ernest-Modeste Grétry is one of my favourite composers, and I have "La Caravane de Caire" as recorded by Les Agrémens directed by Guy van Waas times on repeat these days (Fight me, I love the harp piece in Act II "Danse des femmes"), my eye was obviously drawn to this quote.
I admit, it wasn't easy an easy scan to read, the resolution could be better, but who am I to complain? I love a good contemporary review, and well... I can't say that Kotzebues correspondent wasn't on to something. As with many operas the storyline is thin, rather predictable - and yet it was one of Grétry's most successful operas, performed over 500 times in Paris alone.
The viewer in 1804 had the pleasure of graceful dances (Or as he put "If that opera stays, it's only thanks to the graceful dances, as arranged by Didelot)

Wir haben hier auf dem Französischen Theater zwei Vorstellungen von La Caravane de Caire, grand Opera-Ballet, musique de Gretry gehabt, avec tout son spectacle. Die Musik ist schön, des Spektakels viel, die Ausführung prachtvoll und das Ganze dennoch - etwas langweilig. Schwerlich wird sich diese Oper lange halten; - und wenn sie sich hält, so hat sie dies einzig und allein den lieblichen Tänzen zu verdanken, welche Didelot arrangiert hat. In der Scene, wo auf dem herrlichen Bazard von Corfinis Meisterpinsel, dem Pascha (Hrn. Mées) die Sklaven vorgstellt werden, tanzt zuerst Dem. Rose-Colinet ein Pas de Shawl ganz unvergleichlich. Die Attitüden und Drapperien dieser Künstlerin sind ganz das Werk der Grazien. Darauf folgt ein Pas Indien von Hrn. Didelot selbst, Dem. Rose-Colinet, Dem. Mary Lupino, eine Engländerin von ungefahr 16 Jahren, die gewiss bald in ihrer reizenden Kunst gross seyn wird, Hrn, Didelot's Schülerin, - und von andern seiner Eleven, die ihm Ehre machen, getanzt; dann die hornpipe von Auguste, und ein pas Hongrois vom M. Malberg und Mad. Kolosoff, eine sehr vorzügliche Tänzerin; und dann ein pas Indien, von Dem. Mary Lupino, Josephine Sainclair (ein reizendes Kind von 12 bis 13 Jahren), Jsonipa, Karaikana, Gazopawa und Belieu. - Hrn. Didelot's Stärke besteht vorzüglich in der Mannigfaltigkeit und Schönheit der Gruppen, worin er wahrer Dichter ist. Als Direktor des Tänzer-Corps leistet er außerordentlich viel und dies scheint sein Stolz zu seyn. -
Die reizende Bayadere Mary Lupino, und ihr liebenswürdiger kleiner Lautenschlager Jos. Sainclair, scheinen ihn am herrlichsten zu belohnen.
